Wow, what an illustrator!. I am definitely a fan of the dainty and light illustration style, like that of Julie Morstad, but Ron Mazellans work is so vibrant and full of emotion it's hard not not to be deeply impressed by it.
Mazellan has been an illustrator for more than 20 years and contributed his work to numrous books including the New York Times Bestseller "The Longest Season", by Cal Ripken Jr.

Jill Greenberg- Glass Ceiling
You have 3 weeks left, until August 19th, to see Jill Greenbergs exhibition of "Glass Ceiling" at Clamp Art in Manhattan (521-531 West 25th Street, Ground Floor).
I wish I could go and see this stunning series in person. Aren't the colors amazing? Greenberg claims that this series relates to her roots in feminist art but I am not sure I buy that, her focus seems way too much on aesthetics to be feninist art. Maybe if the models weren't so perfect ....
Not that I'm complaining, I love her work.
"Inspired by a commercial assignment that involved Olympic athletes in stillettos, Greenberg was struck by the absurdity of the styling. The shoes, meant to heighten sexuality restrict movement and impose a lack of control. The tension of the models surfacing for gasps of air while wrestling with the weight of the water acts as a metaphor for the role women must play in the outside world" ( from the gallery note)
The show runs till August 19 at Clamp Art NYC

Vincent J Musi - Taming the Wild
Only a handful of wild animal species have been successfully bred to get along with humans. The reason, scientists say, is found in their genes.Vincent J Musi shot a fascinating series of pictures about domesticated animals.
Check out the fascinating article in the National Geographic about the domestication of animals in our society.

Garrett Karol - Poster Art
If I ever had a band (hiiiiighly unlikely since I can't play an instrument to safe my life and my voice sounds like a strangled cat...) and if I ever would ever go on tour with that imaginary band I would want Garrett Karol to design the poster for my shows. His designs are beyond amazing ....
I've never heard of any of those bands though... I guess I'm just not cool enough.
Wait a minute, I know Ingrid Michaelson! I love that cute song of hers: "The Way I Am"

Julie Morstad - Singing away the Dark
I admit it, I am 26 years old and I enjoy looking at picture books even if there is no 4 year old in sight.
I just love unique, beautiful illustrations, like these from Julie Morstad:
Check out her website for more of her work or her newest illustration project " Singing away the dark" by Caroline Woodward.

My favorite Photograph- Birthday Girl by Hartmut Schwarzbach
A few years ago I stumbled upon this picture and saved it on my computer. I wanted to post it on the blog a while ago but couldn't find the source. Today I searched again and I finally found the information about the photographer. It is part of a series that German photographer Hartmut Schwarzbach took in Manila.
The picture, entitled "birtday girl" was a finalist for the 2009 Sony Photography Award. It shows a little girl in a charcoal burners camp on her 9th birthday. I love this picture because of the pure joy that seems to radiate from this little girl despite her horrible living situation. The juxtaposition of this girls laugh with the wet, smoking trash covered in charcoal surrounding her is just striking.
Sadly, those images are not staged but utter reality for hundreds of children living in a charcoal burners camp called Aroma Smokey Mountain in Manila. I know these pics are from 2 years ago but I want to post them anyways since I think that neither great photography nor the problems behind these pictures ever get old.
All images are property of Hartmut Schwarzbach. You can see the whole series on his website, here .
In 2000 Schwarzbach started working on a documentary and long time project on children right’s, travelling to many Asian and African countries. He uses a medium format Hasselblad camera for portraits and the 35mm for reportages and street photography.
After taking the shots of Annalynn and her peers at Aroma Smokey Mountain he went back to document the life of kids working in gold mines in the Philippines.
